While Hamilton was not successful in maintaining the Federalists as the primary force over Thomas Jefferson's agrarian and state's rights Republican Party, he did win the ultimate war of ideas.

We did become a great commercial nation, with a strong central government. He was better at dueling ideas than duels.

While Hamilton's name and face are on the book jacket, the real focus of this short volume is on its subtitle: "The Art of American Power During the Early Republic. This book presents an interesting, thoughtful disscussion and contrast between the ideals of the Federalists led by Alexander Hamilton and the Jeffersonian Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson during the formative years of the nation immediately after adoption of the U.

Between and , during the presidential administrations of George Washington and John Adams, the views championed by Hamilton generally prevailed in terms of both domestic politics e. Jefferson's victory in the bitterly-contested presidential election of presaged the end of Hamilton's Federalist Party. Nevertheless, a compelling case can be made that the ideals espoused by Hamilton that dominated this critical period of American history laid the foundation for the United States becoming a superpower on the world stage.
